Taiwan Day 5-7 (17-19 Dec Kaohsiung)

We arrived at Kaohsiung about 6+pm. The hotel we stayed – Huahou Hotel, provides complimentary pick-up. Very good ;) I made reservation for a Japanese style room – NT1,500 per night inclusive of breakfast. Quite spacious but design kinda oldish already ;p Also, we realized that the 2 budget hotels we’ve stayed at didn’t install shower curtain so water just splashed everywhere!

Location wise – not very accessible, far from town and tourist spots. So, the best way to go from one place to another was by cab loh… their flag down rate costs NT85 but the meter don’t jump very fast hehe… Hotel provides cab booking service too, and there is no extra charges for booking a cab.

We went to their famous night market – 六合夜市. In terms of variety and number of stalls, they certainly can’t beat 逢甲夜市 (at Taichung)! The 10min cab ride fare was about NT110.

Some of the different types of food we ate at the night market:
Famous fruit juice with milk (board was full of signatures from the various artistes) - NT50 each cup. Very nice indeed!
Garlic & pepper crab (cold) - NT200
Pork rib soup - fantastic! NT35 (pork rib with daicon) & NT45 (pork rib with yam)

The next day, the receptionist told us they need to change our room cos they need to clean up all the rooms on our floor. So they gave us a bigger room which comes with a massage bath tub but told us it was spoilt hahaha!! Anyway, nevermind loh, what to do. It’s a BUDGET hotel haha!!

After breakfast (porridge with simple dishes like pork floss, vegetables, duck egg, pickles and bread with ham & egg), we got the hotel to send us to the Railway Station (complimentary service). We wanted to buy coach tickets to Kenting, our next destination ;) Then we took a public bus from the Railway Station, planning to go to its shopping streets – 新掘江商场 and 原宿玉竹商圈. We got on the bus but wasn’t sure where to alight. So we asked one learned looking auntie where we could alight to go to the shopping streets. Bloody hell!! She kept asking us to go to the 文化中心 which was good for self improvement etc etc, and that the shopping streets we wanted to go sold expensive items blah blah blah… Anyway, after some time, she got us to alight at the Cultural Centre. We weren’t sure and to stop her from nagging, we alighted at the Cultural Centre and realized we have missed the stop where the shopping streets were!!! KNS!!! In the end, we had to walk 30min backwards to the shopping streets!! Arrrggghhh!!!! It was darn INFURIATING!!! Waste our time and energy!! My hubby said not to ask auntie for directions in future cos they always have opinion. Shucks! I should have asked a student instead.

Here’s the lunch we had – 2 bowls of noodle, a plate of vege and a plate of mixed 卤味 – NT195.

And so, my shopping trip begins!! These were what I bought – 1 bag (NT100), 2 pairs of shoes (NT290 per pair), and 3pcs of t-shirts (NT500 for 3pcs). Cheap??? Hehhe!!

Another place of interest is Dream Mall but I was told we could give it a miss if we had no time, so this was low in priority. The other was 高雄85大楼. According to the tourist brochure, it is the highest building in Kaohsiung and its lift the world’s 3rd fastest – bringing one to 75th floor in 43 seconds. We weren’t sure if there was certain operating hours and if we had to pay so we decided to give it a miss. Actually, the location was very far from where we were! Just in case we run into another 怪阿姨, we decided to head towards the 鼓山渡轮站, where we could take a ferry across to 旗津 Island for seafood ;). 旗津is a long narrow island which forms a natural breakwater that protects Kaohsiung Harbour. Fortunately, there was a bus nearby which served the route to the Terminal. The ferry ticket costs NT10 per pax for a 4-6min ride across the Harbour.

The seafood we had – we weren’t hungry so we only ordered 4 items at total of NT400. Ate them without rice ;)
