Taiwan Day 9 (21 Dec Kenting -> Hualien)

The journey from Kenting to Hualien was a long and troublesome one! Haha!! As Kenting does not have railway station, it is only accessible by coach/ car. This was how we travelled:

Kenting -> Fangliao Railway Station (coach – about 1hr)
Fangliao Railway -> Taitung Railway (about 1.5hr)
Taitung Railway -> Hualien Railway (about 4hrs)

Though it was a long trip, we enjoyed the coastal & mountainous scenery throughout! It was a different experience on this east coast compared to the city on the west.
Scenic Pacific Ocean coastline. Nice hoh..
便当we bought at Taitung Railway Station.

The 民宿we stayed is called 石头的家http://www.sutohome.com/ - NT1,600 per night inclusive of homemade breakfast ;) The owner 郑妈妈,is a very warm and hospitable person! She picked us up from Hualien Railway Station (Sutohome is about 10-15min drive away). When we told her we couldn’t get our train tickets from Hualien to Taipei, she helped us to book the tickets online (only Taiwan citizens can book train tickets online) which she managed to book. We were very thankful! The tickets she booked was actually a tourist cabin (观光车)which apparently can only be booked through travel agents. Think she might have pre-booked a few for her customers or perhaps that’s how the system works – allocate a number of tickets for accommodation/hotel owners. Anyway, it was a good experience for us too. Comparable to Eurail, the seats are bigger, has spacious leg room, meal tray (which all other trains don’t which we find it very strange, especially since it’s very common that people buy 便当on board!). Also, we were told this is a more expensive class of train but no difference to us since we bought the 7-trips ticket ;) Definitely worth every cent of it!

When we arrived, 郑妈妈 let us choose the type of rooms either on 2nd or 3rd floor (she stays on the 1st floor). She has a total of 8 rooms, suitable for 2 pax up to 6 pax in a room. In fact, this is her 2nd 民宿 she has recently built & started for about 1 year. Her first one is nearer the city (about 4 yrs). All rooms are quite nicely done up, by herself! She also has a big garden where guests can BBQ, has a small farm where she rears chickens & goose, 2 ponds with fishes… you can buy fireworks (she will bring you to buy them) and set them off at her place too ;)

郑妈妈 then drove us out for dinner. Pork rib noodle (very nice!!) and famous 黄金蛋 (duck egg):

Thereafter, she brought us to watch performances (free to the public) by these 原住民 youths (funded by the government).

Good night... we're heading Taroko Gorge tomorrow - day trip.
